Caltrain has seen a remarkable 60% increase in ridership following its electrification of the fleet, marking a significant win for the transit agency. However, it faces a projected budget deficit exceeding $600 million over the next decade. Despite financial challenges, the positive response to the electrification project, costing nearly $2.5 billion, indicates a promising path forward as more people utilize the serviceâparticularly on weekendsâsuggesting that improved service is translating to higher demand.
"You just have to do it," Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman told SFGATE about the massive investment in electric trains, a project that cost nearly $2.5 billion. "When you deliver a better service, you start seeing the results we have right now. People can't get enough of it."
The transition to electrification is starting to look like a huge win for Caltrain, with ridership numbers soaring since the trains started rolling last fall.
However, the other word puts a bit of a damper on things. That's due to the ballooning budget deficit that the agency projects will top $600 million in the next decade.
Apparently riders are especially excited about weekend service. Ridership is better than it's ever been on Saturday and Sunday in the wake of electrification.
