Jony Ive joined Apple in 1992 after graduating from Newcastle Polytechnic and working at London-based design firm Tangerine. Tangerine secured a contract with Apple, prompting Ive to move to Cupertino and join the design department. He became head of the department in 1996. Steve Jobs's return in 1997 shifted the mission toward making great products, persuading Ive to stay. Ive spent nearly three decades transforming consumer electronics and later partnered with OpenAI to create AI-first devices after OpenAI acquired his startup.
