"Ever since Jony Ive left Apple, there has been a lull, with a suggestion that something big is being cooked behind closed doors. OpenAI and Ive's venture, io, have been working in close quarters on a new family of products that are speculated to be screen-free, pocket-sized devices. In between all this speculation was the Limited Edition Sondek LP12 turntable remake with a refined design and well-tuned audio."
"It has been a considerable honour and enormously enjoyable creating our lantern with Gen and his wonderful team at BALMUDA. As a young boy, I adored sailing and spending my time on the water. Our lantern was created and built for maritime conditions. While the materials, form, and product architecture are new, there is a reassuring familiarity to the nautical lanterns and Fresnel lamps of the past whose designs evolved to address the same unforgiving functional requirements."
Jony Ive's post-Apple activity includes collaboration hints with OpenAI and his venture io on possible screen-free, pocket-sized devices. LoveFrom has received AI hardware influence from OpenAI and teamed with Japanese manufacturer Balmuda to create an upmarket Sailing Lantern. The lantern originated from Ive's frustration with existing yacht lighting and began as sketches shown to Balmuda CEO Gen Terao, who rapidly embraced the prototypes. The design draws on maritime Fresnel lamps and elements of GP14 boats from Ive's childhood. The LoveFrom x Balmuda Sailing Lantern is built for maritime conditions and priced at $4,800.
