AT&T will roll out a digital receptionist in 2025 as a test for select customers. The system uses voice-to-voice and agentic AI to answer incoming calls and ask callers questions to determine whether they are human, bots, urgent, or meeting user-established criteria. If callers provide acceptable responses, calls pass through to the user. The AI can complete certain interactions itself, such as taking messages or accepting deliveries. If callers refuse to identify themselves, are wrong numbers, or fail criteria, the receptionist will hang up or take a message. Users can view a live transcript of the initial interaction.
