A Pew Research Center survey indicates that AI summaries atop Google search results are decreasing user interactions with traditional links. Users exposed to AI summaries clicked on search result links only 8% of the time, compared to 15% for those who did not see AI summaries. Additionally, only 1% of users clicked on links within the AI summaries. The report also noted a higher session termination rate for pages with AI summaries, which were closed instantly by 26% of users compared to 16% for other pages.
Users who encountered an AI summary clicked on a traditional search result link in 8% of all visits. Those who did not encounter an AI summary clicked on a search result nearly twice as often (15% of visits).
Google users who encountered an AI summary also rarely clicked on a link in the summary itself. This occurred in just 1% of all visits to pages with such a summary.
26% of pages with an AI summary were closed out instantly, compared to 16% of pages that did not have recaps.
Pew found 18% of the 68,879 searches its respondents made included an AI recap.
