Museum of Science lets the public interact with robot dogs and humanoid robots
""I think in all likelihood [robots] will become a bigger part of people's lives. So I think it's really, really useful for people to have a chance to see them, learn more about them, ask questions about them.""
""Our goal is to encourage visitors to think deeply about the technology that we're encountering,""
""It's all being controlled either by somebody standing there, holding a remote, and driving it around, or somebody preprogrammed something for the robot to do,""
The Museum of Science’s Exploring AI exhibit features robot dogs and humanoid robots so visitors can see, touch, and learn about current technologies. Spot, a yellow four-legged robot by Boston Dynamics, negotiates an uneven staircase, rocks, and obstacles before returning to its charger every 180 seconds. A replica allows tactile interaction. The museum recently added Unitree’s Go2; both robots perform in a Robot Roundup where scientists remotely operate jumps, rolls, and dances while answering audience questions. Visitors commonly ask about fragility and purpose; the robots are intended to handle dangerous or difficult tasks humans cannot or should not do. The exhibit is continually updated to reflect new technologies.
