"It feels like stepping thirty years back into our childhood. The people who live there seem almost unchanged since the moment they left the Soviet Union. It's like time has stopped in the most nostalgic way."
"Most of the dancers are Ukrainian refugees; because of the invasion, many cannot return home. To support their families, the dancers send half of their salaries directly back to Ukraine."
"Since 2022, Stoianov says, they have adopted a new mission: Ukrainian culture we want to promote Ukrainian culture everywhere."
The Grand Kyiv Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at Oceana Theater in Brighton Beach (Little Odessa) on Dec. 14. The company was founded in 2014 by Alex Stoianov and first toured France, performing in 35 theaters with a mission to make ballet accessible. Since 2022 the troupe has emphasized promoting Ukrainian culture worldwide. Most dancers are Ukrainian refugees who cannot return home because of the invasion, and they send half of their salaries directly back to Ukraine to support families. Brighton Beach resonates for the dancers through its Ukrainian and Russian immigrant community and familiar home-style restaurants.
