The Kenneth Rainin Foundation awarded four artists from the Bay Area each a $100,000 grant as part of the 2025 Rainin Arts Fellowship. Recipients included Brenda Wong Aoki, Christy Chan, Kyle Casey Chu, and Vanessa Sanchez. These artists highlighted the fellowship's significance in providing unconditional financial support and fostering trust in their creative endeavors. Chu, a founder of Drag Queen Story Hour, expressed how the fellowship allows him to honor his community's creative legacies. Aoki discussed the hardships faced by her arts organization after funding cuts affecting vulnerable artists.
"The Rainin Fellowship is an act of trust in art and also an act of trust in artists," Chan told KQED Arts via email.
"My work honors the diverse creative communities I came of age with in San Francisco," Chu said in an email.
"We lost 75% of its funding under the new administration," Aoki said... "an extra hard blow after losing Izu to cancer in January."
