Midwinter Revels: Dancing by the Highland Hearth * Oregon ArtsWatch
"When Dick Lewis first pitched the idea of the Revels to a group of theater professionals, nonprofessionals, and everyday citizens back in 1994, Bill Clinton was president, Nelson Mandela was a global icon, the Dallas Cowboys were the reigning Super Bowl champs and the Notorious B.I.G. released his landmark album, Ready to Die. In Portland, there were theater companies like Stark Raving and Tygre's Heart Shakespeare and Portland Repertory Theatre."
"The Revels' new show this year, Highland Hearth, is a momentous moment for many reasons for the theater company, most significantly because it's the last show that will be helmed by artistic director Bruce Akpan Hostetler. After this show, Hostetler, the Revels' first official artistic director, will be handing over the reins of the company to incoming AD, Fulbright scholar and Drama League Fellow Amanda McRaven."
The Portland Revels has existed for thirty years, surviving the changing landscape of small theater companies in Portland. The company marks the anniversary with Highland Hearth, a production rooted in Scottish history and set in 1640 when the Scottish Parliament banned Yule celebrations for being too Catholic. The production opens Dec. 12 and runs through Dec. 20 at the Scottish Rite Center. Artistic director Bruce Akpan Hostetler will helm his final Revels production before handing leadership to incoming artistic director Amanda McRaven, a Fulbright scholar and Drama League Fellow. The Revels frames the season as a regeneration of light and renewal.
