Are the Braves going to find another backup catcher?
"Austin Wynns was an Athletics roster casualty after being supplanted by Heim. The problem with Wynns is that the 35-year-old journeyman backup catcher isn't actually good at anything, clocking in as a typical backup catcher bat without any notable framing skills. After that, I don't know. That's why I'm asking the question. Other guys that"
The Braves signed Jonah Heim on February 10 anticipating Sean Murphy would miss about a month. Heim produced 45 plate appearances, finishing barely above replacement, aided by one strong game at Coors Field and by slightly outperforming his .278 xwOBA. After Murphy returned from the injured list, Heim was designated for assignment and traded to the Athletics. Murphy’s current injury is expected to last about twice as long, increasing the need for a reliable backup. Sandy Leon was re-signed as a likely stopgap, while Chadwick Tromp has not been used in April and was not selected over Leon. Heim is not actively playing for the Athletics, but re-acquiring him is uncertain. Austin Wynns is another possible option, though he has not shown notable offensive or defensive value.
