What's in a name? Hurricane season has begun and here are the storm names for 2025
Briefly

The names for tropical storms and hurricanes in 2025 have been predetermined six years in advance, managed by the World Meteorological Organization. This year, 21 names are in use, alternating gender, starting with a female name. Notably, prior storm names may be reused unless they are retired due to their impact. For example, names such as Beryl and Helene were retired due to their destructive seasons, replaced by names that will not be in use until 2030. This year sees only one new name, Dexter, replacing Dorian.
This year, the official list of tropical storm and hurricane names for the Atlantic is set well in advance and features a mix of familiar and new names.
Only 21 names are used each year for storms, and they alternate from female to male beginning with a female name in this cycle.
