The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 has ratified a new contract with VTA after a 17-day strike that disrupted transit services. The contract features a 14.5% wage increase over four years and improved benefits. Raj Singh, the union president, acknowledged the frustration among workers after prolonged negotiations, while VTA's assistant manager highlighted the contract's role in managing labor costs amid dwindling revenue. The VTA board is set to vote soon, with the contract potentially starting this Monday if approved.
"The sense that we got was because of the amount of time it took to get to this point, some folks were just either frustrated or they were just tired and wanted to move on," said Raj Singh.
"The structure of the contract allows VTA to manage labor costs predictably over the next four years, supporting our long term financial sustainability," stated VTA Assistant General Manager Greg Richardson.
