"Margaret Atwood's iconic novel The Handmaid's Tale is turning 40 this year. And to celebrate, the book's Canadian publisher McClelland & Stewart is launching a number of commemorative events today to pay tribute to the special anniversary. In Canada, images of handmaids will be projected onto Toronto's City Hall from about 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday (Sept. 24). The images will also be projected onto select public libraries across the world at the same local time."
"Special anniversary editions of the novel will also be released later this fall. One version features Fred Marcellino's original 1986 cover art, available at independent stores, while another, exclusive to Indigo, features Noma Bar's jacket illustration and a previously unpublished 1986 essay written by Atwood called The Handmaid's Tale Before and After. Acclaimed authors from across the globe Salman Rushdie, Elisabeth Moss, Lauren Groff, Cheryl Strayed and Samira Wiley will also join the celebration through video tributes they've created to acknowledge"
The Handmaid's Tale reaches its 40th anniversary with coordinated global commemorations and new editions. Images of handmaids will be projected onto Toronto's City Hall and onto select public libraries worldwide at the same local time. Anniversary book releases include a version with Fred Marcellino's original 1986 cover art for independent stores and an Indigo-exclusive edition featuring Noma Bar's jacket illustration and exclusive bonus material. Prominent figures including Salman Rushdie, Elisabeth Moss, Lauren Groff, Cheryl Strayed and Samira Wiley contributed video tributes. Originally published in 1985, the novel depicts a near-future New England under the Republic of Gilead where fertile women called Handmaids are forced into reproductive servitude, following Offred's navigation of that oppressive regime, conceived as speculative fiction rooted in historical precedents and emerging political trends.
