"The U.S. is at real risk of losing its measles elimination status for the first time in 25 years - now is the time to make sure you and your family are vaccinated,"
"Measles spreads very easily, often before people realize they're sick, and it can lead to serious complications - including pneumonia, brain swelling, blindness, and even death."
Measles cases are increasing across the United States as vaccination rates decline. Declining immunization coverage has placed the U.S. at risk of losing measles elimination status for the first time in 25 years. Measles transmits very easily and often before symptoms appear, which increases the chance of unwitting spread. Severe complications from measles include pneumonia, brain swelling, blindness, and death. A South Carolina outbreak is approaching 800 cases. As of Jan. 29, 2026, 588 confirmed measles cases were reported across 17 states. Families are urged to ensure vaccination to prevent further spread and severe outcomes.
