""I get it, but we're homeless," Degener said."
""Holiday Bash""
A fire severely damaged a historic Red Hook warehouse, leaving the building likely uninhabitable for years and terminating many tenants' leases in November. The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) occupied a two-story studio at 481 Van Brunt Street for 35 years and supported local artists with exhibits, workshops, and events. The O'Connell Organization had kept rents below market to retain artists but had forgone fire insurance, leaving rebuilding costs on the owner and resulting in projected higher rents when the warehouse reopens. BWAC cannot afford its former space and has begun searching for a new home while fundraising, including a December 14 live auction called "Holiday Bash."
