Gerritsen Beach Library reopened on Thursday, a year and a half after closing for necessary upgrades in July 2024. The 10,000-square-foot facility renovation finished six months ahead of schedule and $300,000 below budget. The New York City Department of Design and Construction oversaw roof replacement and repair of compromised structural elements, bringing roof systems into compliance with the latest Energy Conservation Codes to improve energy efficiency and weather-tightness. Facades and masonry parapet were restored, and damaged interior trusses were repaired or replaced. Interior painting, a refurbished children's area for story and playtime, and freshly landscaped outdoor seating support indoor and outdoor programming. Linda Johnson noted the branch’s near-century history and its current role among Brooklyn Public Library branches, and a council spokesperson mentioned ongoing community collaborations including an upcoming toy drive on Dec. 17.
