Berkeley police oversight resignations should be a wake-up call,' officials say
"Because we believe our continued efforts to fulfill the mission of the PAB will be in vain, we regrettably must resign."
"Kitty and Juliet, out of everybody on the board, had a really strong belief that police accountability could really work in Berkeley if the city wanted it to, so their resignation is a signal of how bad things are."
Kitty Calavita and Juliet Leftwich resigned from the Berkeley Police Accountability Board, accusing city leadership of ignoring the board's perspectives and overruling its investigative authority. Berkeley has maintained police oversight since 1973, originally via the Police Review Commission; nearly 85% of voters later approved a charter amendment creating the Police Accountability Board and a Director of Police Accountability Office. Calavita and Leftwich served on oversight bodies since 2017 and were the longest-tenured members. They declared their efforts to fulfill the board's mission would be in vain and said Berkeley was no longer a model for police oversight. Their departures contribute to five vacancies on the nine-member board.
