"If you need to renew your California driver's license or identification card, you'll notice some changes. The DMV announced that new licenses are being rolled out for residents, which started on October 1. California will be one of the first states to add a digital security signature to one of the two barcodes on the back. There will also no longer be a magnetic strip on the back of the card."
"An image aimed to show the beauty of California's landscape will be in the background of the cards. "The new cards use next-generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California's iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline," said DMV Director Steve Gordon. All current licenses and IDs are still cleared for use until they expire. It will cost $45 to upgrade to the new license and $39 for ID cards."
New California driver's licenses and identification cards began rolling out October 1 for residents. One of the two barcodes on the back will include a digital security signature, making California among the first states to adopt that feature. The magnetic stripe on the back of the cards will be removed. A scenic image of California landscapes will serve as the card background. Existing licenses and IDs remain valid until their expiration dates. Upgrading to the new driver's license costs $45, while a new identification card costs $39.
