Con artist-turned good guy Abagnale to speak Sept. 30 in Walnut Creek
"Coming in with Abagnale, the Lesher series is helping a local nonprofit by raising awareness and connecting them with the community. The group associated with Abagnale's event is Contra Costa Senior Legal Services, which offers free legal help to Contra Costa County residents age 60 and older, focusing on housing issues, financial security and protecting seniors from physical, emotional and financial abuse."
"Born April 27, 1948, in Bronxville, New York (although some sources say the Bronx), Abagnale turned to a life of crime at age 15. Though he started with petty crimes, he later impersonated an airline pilot, cashed fraudulent checks while on the run and spent time in prison. These events led Abagnale to write "Catch Me If You Can," a partly fictionalized autobiography published in 1980. This book inspired the 2002 movie of the same name."
Frank Abagnale, a former con artist who later advised the FBI on fraud detection and cybersecurity, will be the featured speaker Sept. 30 at the Lesher Center. The appearance marks his return and celebrates the 20th Newsmakers season. The event will benefit Contra Costa Senior Legal Services, offering free legal help to residents age 60 and older, focusing on housing, financial security and protection from abuse. Abagnale turned to crime at 15, later impersonating an airline pilot, cashing fraudulent checks and serving prison time. He wrote Catch Me If You Can, a 1980 autobiography that inspired a 2002 film.
