"It's an organized group of people doing vandalism. We can't be silenced about this. People are getting intimidated. People are worried,"
"I think signs are an important part of our election process. When you actually go out and basically take off every single sign that is visible from a particular candidate, you're trying to disadvantage and target a particular candidate. That's what I'm facing."
"This is a real interference in a local democratic election."
At least three candidates in the Scarborough-Rouge Park Ward 25 byelection experienced repeated vandalism of election signs. Hundreds of signs were taken, knocked over, levelled and trashed, with vandals in some cases entering private lawns to remove signage. Campaigns reported thousands of dollars in damage and loss, and volunteers spent time re-installing signs. Large signs cost about $12 and small signs about $5. One campaign provided security camera video and a licence plate number to police. Advance voting drew 4,376 ballots. Twenty candidates are contesting the seat, and voting day is Sept. 29.
