"The motion which was brought forward by Mayor Olivia Chow and passed almost unanimously directs the city manager to implement more aggressive active transit signal priority at surface portions of both the Line 6 Finch West LRT and the perpetually under-construction Line 5 Eglinton LRT. The move, which would give LRT vehicles priority in intersections over left-turning cars, is needed to get the line moving at a faster pace, Chow said."
"The new Finch West LRT officially opened to passengers on Sunday after four years of delays and budget run-ups. Line 6 of the TTC, which includes 18 stops, connects Finch West station to Humber Polytechnic's north campus. After its grand opening earlier this month, a CBC Toronto reporter rode the entire 10.3-kilometre line from east to west, finding it took roughly 55 minutes to complete. The reporter's eastbound return trip was closer to 47 minutes."
"During Tuesday's debate councillors also referenced Toronto runner Mac Bauer, who has been racing TTC vehicles for the past year he managed to outrun the Finch LRT by 18 minutes. We can't allow that to ever happen again, Coun Josh Matlow said, referring to Bauer's feat. The LRT is meant to be rapid transit. The lone dissenting vote for the plan was from Coun. Stephen Holyday, who said council was rushing forward on a plan without information about how this decision might affect other motorists. Holyday also said he was concerned about public backlash from people stuck waiting at intersections in their cars."
City council directed the city manager to implement more aggressive active transit signal priority at surface sections of Line 6 Finch West and Line 5 Eglinton. The adjustment gives LRT vehicles priority in intersections over left-turning cars to improve vehicle speeds. Line 6 spans 10.3 kilometres with 18 stops and connects Finch West station to Humber Polytechnic's north campus. Initial runs recorded end-to-end times near 55 minutes east-to-west and about 47 minutes on the eastbound return. Councillors cited instances of a runner outperforming the Finch LRT by 18 minutes to justify faster service. One councillor voted against the motion citing lack of traffic-impact data and concern for motorists delayed at intersections.
