""It makes me really, really sad," he said. "Even after graduating, I'd come here a lot to meet up with friends in the city. It's really sad to see an old institution leave Toronto.""
""I'm devastated," he told CBC Toronto. "I've already arranged for two of my buddies to come down in the next week just to hang out and reminisce a bit.""
""We're in a housing crisis in the city,' Moise said. 'One of the factors of students not coming to TMU is that they don't have housing and so they will go elsewhere.' Nonetheless, he says it's "bittersweet" to see the pub go, which is why they'll look to preserve the pub's iconic red sign and display it on the future property."
Imperial Pub, located near Sankofa Square in downtown Toronto, will close on Nov. 15 after operating since 1944. The bar opened during World War II under Jack Newman and became known for its pool table, inexpensive drinks and warm atmosphere. Longtime patrons described fond memories of meeting classmates, studying between sessions and returning after graduation. The closure follows city approval of a major redevelopment project that will create student housing for Toronto Metropolitan University. Coun. Chris Moise described the change as bittersweet and said the pub's iconic red sign will be preserved for display on the future property. The pub's manager said the business must close despite patron support.
