"Paul and Islam had claimed three Canadian Championship medals and competed at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games before retiring in 2016. Sidhu addressed the court today, apologizing to the victims and saying he takes full responsibility for the crash."
Sukhwinder Sidhu pleaded guilty in February to dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in a 2023 crash in Melancthon Township, Ontario. A truck entered a construction zone at a high rate of speed and crashed into stopped cars, involving seven vehicles. The crash killed Alexandra Paul, then 31, and injured her infant son. Paul had been an Olympic figure skater, competing as an ice dancer with Mitchell Islam, winning three Canadian Championship medals and participating in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games before retiring in 2016. Family members delivered victim impact statements describing a lasting void and heartbreak, including concern that her son will grow up without her. Sidhu apologized and said he took full responsibility.
