Rivian's CEO said there's a 'shocking lack of choice' for EVs in the US
""I really think the constraint isn't the demand side, I think it's the supply side," Scaringe said. "I think there's a shocking lack of choice, that there are much better choices in Europe. And by far, there's the most choice in China.""
""And that's not a reflection of a healthy market with lots of choice," Scaringe said. "If you think of it as a consumer, you have 300 different internal combustion engine choices at that price or lower, and you have maybe one highly compelling EV choice.""
""In October, Tesla unveiled its most affordable models to date: the $36,990 Model 3 Standard and the $39,990 Model Y Standard.""
Electric-vehicle adoption in the United States is around 8%, substantially lower than in many other regions. Limited supply of affordable EV models constrains adoption, with fewer than five strong options near the average new-car price. Within a roughly $50,000 price range, consumers effectively have one compelling EV option. By contrast, Europe and China offer far greater EV choice. Consumers face hundreds of internal-combustion options at comparable prices. Rivian is initiating production of the R2, a $45,000 SUV, aimed at expanding lower-priced EV availability. The company supports efforts to increase US-based manufacturing.
