Tesla will modify door-handle systems after regulatory probes and owner complaints in China and the United States. The NHTSA logged nine complaints about 2021 Model Ys where owners could not enter after the 12V battery was low. Tesla plans to combine electronic and mechanical interior releases into a single control to reduce stress during so-called panic situations and to leverage muscle memory for children and emergencies. The company is reviewing Chinese exterior-handle regulations and expects to provide a solid solution. The new Model Y already includes emergency mechanical rear release latches.
