The last COVID surge ended eight months ago. Is a summer spike coming?
Briefly

Despite California Governor Gavin Newsom's declaration that COVID is behind us, recent data suggests a potential surge this summer. Wastewater COVID levels in Santa Clara County have seen an uptick since early May, particularly in San Jose and Palo Alto. Experts, including Dr. John Swartzberg, warn of the newly emergent, more transmissible variant NB.1.8.1, which poses a risk during the summer travel season. While previous surges primarily occurred in winter, the state experienced a considerable summer spike in 2024, prompting concerns of a repeating pattern.
It's been a delightful six months, but we can't be very sure about what this virus is going to do. Very good infectious disease epidemiologists argue we will see a summer surge.
It does appear to have greater transmissibility than its predecessors, and we've seen that pattern over and over again. What this virus is doing is trying to find new hosts.
