Tami Laird and her nine-year-old son, Stirling, were stranded in the Northern California wilderness after taking a wrong turn on July 11 while traveling to a Cub Scout camp. Laird's GPS led them onto a rough dirt road, and they soon realized they were lost, with their car stuck and no cell service. Over the next 24 hours, she made multiple attempts to call 911. Despite fears and dangers from wildlife, Laird remained calm for Stirling's sake, using their supplies to endure the ordeal until help arrived.
"I would start to cry and then try not to, because I didn't want to upset my son. There was this fear of not being found."
"The terrain started getting steeper and steeper and bumpier and bumpier, and that’s when I realized something was wrong."
"I was very impressed with Stirling for staying calm throughout the ordeal and using his Cub Scout whistle repeatedly to signal for help."
"Recognizing the potential dangers of the area, I decided to stay locked inside the car overnight with my son."
