New Mexico Touts Largest Increase in Broadband Access
Briefly

New Mexico led the nation with a 20.52% increase in high-speed broadband access, as per Ookla research, during the last six months of 2023 and the first six months of 2024. Colorado followed with a 19.13% rise. Significant progress included a 73% increase in South Santa Fe and improvements in rural Chaparral and Navajo Nation areas. This growth resulted from prioritizing fiber developments and increasing consumer awareness of available speeds. The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion is supporting this initiative with substantial grants for better connectivity.
"The boost shows that more New Mexicans are achieving higher, more reliable broadband speeds," Jeff Lopez, the director of New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE), said in a press release. "This is a great sign of progress in our mission for wider and faster connectivity."
Connect New Mexico points to Ookla research, which found that during the last six months of 2023 and the first six of 2024, there was a 20.52% increase in addresses with broadband access across New Mexico.
Progress in New Mexico's broadband access includes a 73% increase in South Santa Fe due to new developments and service provided by cable and fixed wireless access.
Navajo Nation areas north of Gallup around Coyote Canyon saw a 40% increase in broadband access, indicating significant improvement in service availability.
