"ASHLAND The natural gas pipeline that exploded Thursday morning near Hayward was installed in the 1940s and was damaged during recent road construction work, according to a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary investigation. The findings come just days after a line carrying natural gas line that was inadvertently cut and in the process of repairs exploded, a blast that sparked a three-alarm fire in a neighborhood in Ashland and injured six people."
"The agency plans to work at the site for an additional five to seven days; a final report outlining the likely cause of the explosion and any factors that played a role will take between 12 and 24 months, Knudson said."
A natural gas pipeline installed in the 1940s was damaged during grading work for a road improvement project and subsequently exploded on the 800 block of East Lewelling Boulevard in Ashland near Hayward. The explosion sparked a three-alarm fire and injured six people. A third-party construction crew struck an underground gas line, and utility workers were called to identify a leak. NTSB investigators arrived, completed a preliminary review, and will work at the site for five to seven more days. The investigation will include evidence collection, testing, a timeline of events, review of one-call and facility records, and interviews; a final report will take 12–24 months.
