Petaluma City Schools are contemplating a ban on cellphone usage on all campuses from kindergarten through 12th grade. This proposal aims to provide a distraction-free learning environment. Many parents believe that phones are distracting, hindering student concentration during class. The district currently has restrictions in elementary and middle schools, but high school students can use phones during breaks. A new state mandate requires schools to address mobile device usage by July 2026, prompting the conversation for stricter regulations in Petaluma.
"The phones are out all the time; they're listening to music in math class, they're checking their messages," said parent Rachel Thomas.
"If you toured a high school you were going to send your kids to and it was in the middle of a county fair... that's what phones are like when we let our kids carry a circus in their pocket." said parent Rachel Thomas.
"It's really our effort to provide a focused learning environment, removing distractions students feel constantly," said Esmeralda Sanchez Moseley, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.
The district is considering making all campuses 'phone free' during school hours in order to create a distraction-free learning environment.
