Southampton reached the play-off final at Wembley after beating Middlesbrough 2-1 in the semi-final second leg. The Saints had been 18 points behind Boro in February but finished strongly to force a decisive match. After a goalless first leg, Middlesbrough scored first when Riley McGree tucked in Callum Brittain’s low cross. Southampton responded in added time through Ross Stewart’s header after Ryan Manning’s volley was saved by Sol Brynn. The second half became sustained pressure for Southampton, with chances for Manning and Cyle Larin denied by Brynn. The tie went to extra time, where Brynn made further saves before Shea Charles’ cross slipped in to seal the win and a final against Hull City.
