"My concern is that not all of the energy that they're using for data centers is renewable, which will undercut the city's own climate commitments,"
"San Jose has a goal to be carbon-neutral by 2030, and building these data centers isn't going to help us reach that goal."
"To give you an idea, training a single AI model could power 100 U.S. homes in one year. And then, it can take training hundreds of models to ensure that one AI is working correctly,"
"local government officials to implement regulations and make sure that data centers do not harm surrounding communities."
AI data centers in Silicon Valley are rapidly expanding and require massive electricity and cooling. There are 135 data centers in the Bay Area and San Jose's 21 centers consumed just over 80 million kilowatt-hours in 2024. Training a single AI model can consume energy equivalent to powering 100 U.S. homes for a year, and training and testing multiple models multiplies that impact. Youth climate activists in San Jose warn that nonrenewable energy use undermines the city's carbon-neutral-by-2030 goal and call for local regulations to protect surrounding communities.
