Mystery leak flows through Staten Island streets despite dry conditions
"Water could be seen running next to the curb along Castleton Avenue, beginning at Brighton Avenue, near Morris Intermediate School. The water runs down Castleton and makes a right turn at N. Randall Avenue. The water continues to run for a bit longer until petering out near Valencia Avenue. The water runs for more than a tenth of a mile."
"The DEP said that the valve is located several feet below street grade and that when the valve begins to leak, water seeps into the surrounding subsurface sediment rather than flowing directly to the surface. As the ground becomes saturated, the water gradually makes its way upward, which is why it appears as a slow, persistent leak, according to DEP"
Dry conditions and drought warnings affect much of New York state and reservoirs in Silver Lake Park show evaporation. In New Brighton, a persistent flow runs beside the curb along Castleton Avenue from Brighton Avenue past N. Randall Avenue toward Valencia Avenue, covering more than a tenth of a mile and sometimes wetting nearby driveways. The flow appears to originate beneath a road-construction plate and floods a manhole cover. A leaking underground valve located several feet below street grade allows water to seep into subsurface sediments; as those sediments saturate the water gradually migrates upward. DEP intends to replace the valve and schedule repairs to limit shutdown impacts.
