The karearea, New Zealand's only falcon, was crowned Bird of the Year after more than 75,000 voters from 123 countries participated. Voter turnout was the second-highest on record. The karearea can reach speeds of 200 kilometers per hour when hunting and faces threats from habitat loss and introduced predators. Official estimates place the population between 5,000 and 8,000 individuals. The kea finished in second place. Around 80% of New Zealand's native bird species face varying levels of threat. Habitat destruction, climate change and introduced predators continue to push many species toward extinction while protection costs rise.
