"emissions from motor vehicles and engines contribute to the greenhouse gas pollution that threatens public health and welfare,"
"Now, over the span of a few months, the U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA have sought to manufacture a basis to reject this overwhelming scientific consensus, endangering all Americans and all New Yorkers,"
New York City joined a coalition of states and local governments opposing the EPA's proposal to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding, which authorizes regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles. The EPA framed the proposal as a way to lower energy costs and revive the auto industry, but the change could disrupt the city's plans to cut emissions and phase out gas-powered vehicles by 2035. City officials warned that rolling back the finding would worsen flooding and extreme heat, disproportionately affect vulnerable communities and local economies, and contradict prior EPA conclusions about vehicle emissions. The action coincides with Climate Week NYC and follows years of city climate investments.
