San Mateo’s Sustainability & Infrastructure Committee voted unanimously to keep the separated bike lanes on Humboldt Street and endorsed traffic calming measures, street lighting improvements, and exploration of a permit parking program for North Central. There was strong resident turnout with support from kids, teenagers, school board members, and non-bikers. Comments and survey results showed overwhelming opposition to proposed bike boulevard alternatives that would remove separated lanes and divert cyclists to narrow, unprotected streets. Commissioners warned that removing and installing bike boulevards would cost $1.5 million amid projected city budget deficits and an unfunded capital backlog.
