The AI Race Is Pressuring Utilities to Squeeze More From Europe's Power Grids
"National Grid reports that proposed data centers representing more than 30 gigawatts (GW) of power demand are awaiting connection to its grid, equal to two thirds the peak demand of Great Britain."
"The wait for permission to plug in is causing some data center projects to collapse, undermining European ambitions to capture a share of the hundreds of billions of dollars AI labs are spending on compute."
""There's no one simple solution," says Steve Smith, President at National Grid Partners. "What you have to do is a lot of everything.""
European countries are struggling to establish new data centers due to energy transport limitations. Although energy generation is on track, grid operators lack the necessary infrastructure to deliver it effectively. National Grid reports over 30 gigawatts of power demand from proposed data centers awaiting grid connection, which is two-thirds of Great Britain's peak demand. This backlog is causing project cancellations and hindering Europe's ability to capitalize on AI compute investments. Grid operators are exploring various methods to increase capacity, but no single solution exists to resolve the issue.
