Epic, the Irish emigration museum, created a fake trailer for a non-existent film titled Dear Erin. This stunt aimed to expose Hollywood's clichéd portrayals of Ireland, depicting Irish people as fist-fighting drunks or hopeless romantics. The trailer featured common stereotypes seen in films like Wild Mountain Thyme and PS I Love You. According to the museum's director, such representations warp perceptions of Ireland as a complex society. The museum's aim was to challenge these tired clichés and highlight the impact of Hollywood portrayals on the understanding of Irish identity.
The trailer features the actor Peter Coonan sporting shamrocks on his lapel and surrounded by empty beer glasses as his voiceover reminisces about meeting Erin.
We created a trailer for a film that we hope never gets made, and filled it with all of the tired, cliched portrayals of Irish people often seen in Hollywood movies.
