"A couple of years after the pandemic, the Castro family decided to take a leap of faith and open a small Mexican restaurant in an unassuming corner on Vineland Avenue near a smoke shop and a used car dealership in North Hollywood. Gema and José Castro decided to focus on birria and used a recipe passed down from Jose's mother for their tacos."
"Today that leap of faith has paid off because Yelp has just named their family restaurant as the number one of the Top 100 Taco Spots in the United States for 2025. "This is such an incredible honor. I think people like our food because it's authentic, people feel they're eating in their own homes because everything is made here fresh by our own hands," said Gema, who was busy at the colorful restaurant preparing to-go orders for customers."
A couple of years after the pandemic the Castro family opened a small Mexican restaurant on Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood near a smoke shop and a used car dealership. Gema and José Castro focused on birria using a recipe passed down from Jose's mother. Gema left her job at Trader Joe's and their adult son Anthony quit his biotech job to help run the five-table Birrieria Familia Castro. Yelp named the restaurant number one on its Top 100 Taco Spots in the United States for 2025. Yelp identified businesses with many reviews mentioning "tacos" and ranked them by review volume and ratings. The list includes 45 California restaurants and highlights the Southland as a taco hot spot with many Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside County entries.
