"We're not going to launch a product that the consumer's not going to enjoy,"
"We need to make sure the product is right."
PepsiCo is accelerating a shift from synthetic dyes to natural colors across its food and beverage portfolio. Around 40% of its U.S. products currently contain synthetic dyes. The transition requires finding natural ingredients that provide stable shelf life, preserve flavor, and are available in adequate, safe supply. PepsiCo tests prototypes with trained experts and consumer panels and ensures manufacturing compatibility and new packaging. The company is awaiting FDA approval for natural alternatives and has not committed to phasing out petroleum-based dyes by the end of 2026. Tostitos and Lay’s will be first, with chips and dips rolling out soon, and experiments continue to color Cheetos with spices.
