Environmental groups have filed a unique lawsuit against TotalEnergies in Paris, accusing the company of greenwashing and misleading consumers about its climate commitments. They claim that the company’s advertising exaggerates its efforts towards carbon neutrality by 2050 while simultaneously expanding fossil fuel production. This case could have significant implications for how energy companies are allowed to market their environmental initiatives amid heightened scrutiny from EU regulators. TotalEnergies insists its practices are not misleading, asserting that they are genuinely committed to transitioning towards renewable energy.
"For the average consumer, it is impossible to understand that TotalEnergies is actually expanding fossil fuel production," said Clementine Baldon, a lawyer for the NGOs.
"The company's strategy will not help the energy transition, it delays it, even prevents it, and it contributes to putting the objectives of the Paris accord at risk," she added.
