Yuko Shimizu is a notable illustrator and educator who transitioned to art education later in her career. After working in PR, she attended The School of Visual Arts, where she honed her skills and now teaches emerging artists. In a conversation at the OFFF Festival, she reflected on the importance of life experience before entering art school, answering the uncertainties young students face. Yuko emphasized that while challenges exist in the art industry, especially with AI's rise, she encourages students to cultivate their personal artistic voices beyond technology.
At a young age, it’s hard to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. I knew what I wanted from my experience.
It's a little scary to get out of school, but with my work experience, I had an easier transition into the art world.
I encourage my students to think beyond AI technology and to explore their personal artistic voices.
Going to art school later gave me a clearer perspective on my career path and what I wanted to achieve.
