Pinterest Tackles AWS EC2 Network Throttling to Enhance Service Reliability
Briefly

Pinterest Engineering recently shared its experience with network throttling issues affecting its critical KVStore service on Amazon EC2. The platform experienced latency and application timeouts during high traffic, primarily due to the inconsistent bandwidth of EC2 instance types. In response, Pinterest began migrating to AWS Nitro-based instances for improved performance but encountered performance degradations during bulk data uploads, prompting a brief halt in migration. They are now focusing on selecting instances with higher baseline bandwidth and employing traffic shaping techniques to mitigate ongoing network throttling challenges.
To enhance network reliability, Pinterest adjusted its EC2 instance selection and implemented traffic shaping, resolving throttling issues that affected user engagement on key features.
Faced with latency and service disruptions from Amazon EC2 instances, Pinterest identified the need for migration to instances with higher baseline bandwidth to maintain performance during peak traffic.
