"Lin added UCLA to a class action lawsuit. The original lawsuit was filed in June by law professors from UC Berkeley opposing different grant cuts. UCLA faculty and those from other UC campuses joined the suit later. Neither UCLA nor UC are parties to the lawsuit. Lin issued a ruling in August that resulted in $81 million in grants from the National Science Foundation being restored to UCLA."
"The White House did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment on Monday's ruling. The Trump administration has used its control of federal funding to push for reforms at elite colleges that the president decries as overrun by liberalism and antisemitism. The administration also has launched investigations into diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, saying they discriminate against white and Asian American students."
A federal judge ordered restoration of $500 million in federal research grant funding that had been frozen at UCLA, citing likely violations of the Administrative Procedure Act. The Trump administration previously withdrew $584 million in grants over allegations of campus antisemitism, use of race in admissions and recognition of transgender students' gender identities. Judge Rita Lin added UCLA to a class-action originally filed by UC Berkeley law professors; UCLA and UC are not parties to the suit. An earlier ruling restored $81 million in National Science Foundation grants after finding those cuts violated a prior injunction. The White House did not immediately respond.
