The company has since corrected the setting, removed the exposed files and implemented security measures."
Petco's Vetco clinics website exposed a large volume of customer and pet information after a security lapse that made files accessible online. Exposed data included names, driver's license numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, financial information, medical histories, pet names and vaccination records. The misconfiguration prompted Petco to take part of the Vetco site offline, remove the exposed files and implement additional security measures. A notice filed by California's attorney general attributed the exposure to an incorrect software setting. Petco has not confirmed whether any data were extracted. Impacted customers may be eligible for credit and identity monitoring in some states and should contact Petco for options.
