Jason Collins Got To Tell His Own Story | Defector
"“He was 47. Last year, Collins was diagnosed with a brain tumor and later revealed that it was Stage 4 glioblastoma, a particularly deadly form.”"
Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player, died at his home in Los Angeles at age 47 after a battle with brain cancer. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor and later revealed it was Stage 4 glioblastoma. He traveled to Singapore for experimental treatment aimed at slowing tumor progress long enough for personalized immunotherapy. The treatment enabled him to return to the United States and make public appearances, but the cancer returned and worsened. Collins played 13 NBA seasons and became widely known for coming out in 2013 as the first openly gay active athlete in one of the four major American men’s pro sports leagues. He later joined the Brooklyn Nets on a 10-day contract, finished the season, and retired in 2014.
