In the aftermath of Trump’s re-election, LGBTQ+ Americans, particularly trans individuals, are urgently seeking asylum in Canada, as evidenced by 1,177 requests for help within 24 hours of the election. Trans people comprised over half of these requests, reflecting a significant escalation in migration concerns. Rainbow Railroad reported a staggering 994% increase in applications from U.S. residents compared to the prior year, indicating a dire situation for many. Concerns include threats of criminalizing trans identities, prompting individuals like Hannah Kreager to relocate to Canada in search of safety.
In the first 24 hours after Trump's re-election, we received 1,177 requests for assistance from the United States, with 51% from trans people: 35% from trans women, 16% from trans men.
The avalanche of aid requests received by Rainbow Railroad represents the largest number received in a single day from a single country, Chan notes.
So far in 2025, we have received 3,524 applications from U.S. residents; a 994% increase compared to the same period last year.
Kreager decided it was time to leave her country. The federal government is threatening to criminalize trans identities, she explains.
