Fifty-two point four percent of couples are female and forty-seven point seven percent are male. California has the largest number of same-sex couples (162,914) but a lower per-capita rate (12.09 per 1,000 households). Washington D.C. has the highest per-capita rate at 25.77 same-sex couples per 1,000 households. States with notable per-capita rates include Vermont (12.41), Massachusetts (12.17) and Florida (11.34). Many high-rate states were early adopters of marriage equality.
