On a significant day for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, four activists from the infamous Hong Kong 47 were released from prison after over four years of detention. Among them, Jimmy Sham, a key political and LGBTQ activist, played a pivotal role in the Civil Human Rights Front, known for its large-scale protest organization. Their release marks the second wave of departures following a historic national security trial where most of the activists were charged with conspiracy against the state, stemming from efforts to establish a primary election aiming to win legislative power.
Among those freed was Jimmy Sham, a longtime political and LGBTQ activist who previously led the Civil Human Rights Front, an influential pro-democracy group.
The 47 pro-democracy campaigners were arrested in 2021 and charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under a national law dictated by Beijing.
Only two of the 47 pro-democracy activists were acquitted after the marathon trial, which resulted in sentences of up to 10 years for others.
The activists were found guilty of organizing an unofficial primary election aimed at winning legislative seats to block government bills.
