Most council events cut over cost in Tower Hamlets

London councils have cancelled 17 events over the past five years due to financial pressures, with Tower Hamlets responsible for 10 of these cancellations. Other boroughs including Greenwich, Havering, Lewisham, and Hounslow also cancelled events. London Councils reports an extremely challenging financial outlook, with councils facing a £1bn budget shortfall this year. Tower Hamlets Council attributes cancellations to uncertainty from the government's Fair Funding Review. Seven of Tower Hamlets' ten cancelled events occurred in 2025, including three in Victoria Park. Notable cancelled events include the Blackheath Fireworks Display, Sparkle in the Park, and the Havering Show. Council representatives state they must make difficult decisions to protect vital services, sometimes requiring event cancellations.
